Former Orlando Pirates defender Papi Khomane and his mother die in a car accident

Former Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos captain Papi Khomane and his mother were killed in a car accident on Saturday morning. According to his father, Johannes ‘Yster’ Khomane, his son and mother and another passenger – brother in law – were on their way to a funeral in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal when they were involved in an accident.

Khomane senior said the three were declared dead when they arrived at a local health facility.

“Yes, it is true that they all passed away this morning,” said an emotional Khomane on Saturday night. He said the details were still sketchy as to what had happened.

“They left in the morning for a funeral there and I don’t have more details about what happened.” He concludes.

The 49-year-old lanky defender followed in his father’s footsteps who also featured for Pirates. He had nine Bafana Bafana caps at the time of his retirement in 2007 after featuring 151 times for Pirates.
