Uncle Arrested For Assault And Murder Of 16-Year-Old Niece

A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the assault and murder of his 16-year-old niece in Thohoyandou, Vhembe District. The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at approximately 20:30.




According to police reports, the suspect had been searching for the victim, who had not been home for several days. Upon locating her at her residence, a confrontation ensued, and the situation escalated. The suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with an object, causing her to attempt to flee. However, she fell and was taken back to the house by her uncle.

The victim’s mother summoned emergency medical services, and upon arrival, the paramedics declared the victim dead. The suspect was immediately apprehended by the authorities.



General Thembi Hadebe expressed shock and dismay at the incident, stating, “It is shocking and disturbing to hear that the perpetrator in this matter is a family member, an uncle to the victim who is supposed to guide and protect a young girl in this regard. This incident underscores the importance of addressing, preventing violence within a family setup and communities at large.”

The suspect is expected to appear in court to face charges related to the assault and murder of his niece.
