How To Check If Your Prepaid Electricity Meter Has Been Upgraded

Here’s how you can easily check if your prepaid electricity meter has been upgraded to the latest KRN2 version.




Eskom has given prepaid electricity customers until 24 November 2024 to upgrade their meters to the Key Revision Number (KRN) 2.

South Africa reportedly has an estimated 12 million prepaid electricity customers while just over six million are supplied by Eskom.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR PREPAID ELECTRICITY METER

The power utility said in order to check whether your meter has been re-coded/upgraded to KRN2 or is still on KRN1, one should enter the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on the prepaid meter’s keypad.



The screen will display either the number 1 or 2, and in some cases, there may also be alphabetical letters alongside the KRN number.

Eskom said number 1 means your meter is still on KRN1 and needs to be re-coded/upgraded to KRN2.

Number 2 means your meter has been re-coded/upgraded to KRN2. Your credit token slip will also reflect KRN2 when you make electricity purchases.




NOVEMBER DEADLINE WILL NOT BE EXTENDED

Meanwhile, Eskom has warned that after the November deadline, meters will no longer accept electricity tokens unless they are updated to KRN2.

“Failure to re-code by the deadline will prevent customers from loading electricity tokens, rendering their meters inoperable,” the power utility said.

To make things easier, Eskom said it has already prepared 97% of the prepaid electricity meters by pre-coding them so customers can complete the process themselves.



If your meter has not been re-coded, it will not accept the tokens you have purchased, which means it will stop working. All prepaid meters must be re-coded, whether you are an Eskom customer or a municipally supplied customer.
