Elia Maeko From Mphagani Village Among Three Accused In The Murder Of Ditebogo Phalane In Soshanguve

Elia Maeko, from Mphagani village in the Greater Giyani Municipality, has been charged with the murder of five-year-old Ditebogo Junior Phalane, alongside two other suspects, Ali Sithole and Nido Gumbi.

The trio faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances following a botched hijacking in Soshanguve in May.

Ditebogo was tragically killed when he ran outside to greet his father, who was returning home. An armed gang opened fire on the child during an attempted hijacking of his father’s bakkie. The senseless act of violence has left the Soshanguve community reeling and mourning the loss of a young life.

Maeko’s arrest came after he posted on Facebook, boasting about money obtained through criminal activities, even after his bank account was blocked. His social media activity drew the attention of law enforcement, leading to his capture and subsequent charges.

Initially, the accused abandoned their bid for bail. However, they have now had a change of heart and wish to apply for bail.

On Tuesday, their lawyer informed the court of their intention to bring a bail application. The case has been postponed until 5 September to allow for the bail application to be heard and to consolidate additional charges against Maeko, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Gumbi, one of the co-accused, also faces charges of being in the country illegally, adding to the complexity of the case.

As the legal process continues, the family of Ditebogo Phalane and the broader community await justice for the young boy who lost his life in such a tragic and avoidable manner.
