The sons of a legendary musician are following in their father’s footsteps. Richie (28) and Sello (27) Teanet Peta from Mapitlula village, Bolobedu South, are continuing their parents, the king of Shangaan Disco, Peta Teanet, and the queen of Xitsonga disco, Vuyelwa, legacy in the music industry.
Sello is also known as C boy Teanet. “The boys attended Mapitlula Primary School and Thapane Primary School and later Stanley Mopai High School. They started making music in church with Richie playing instruments such as drums, keyboard, lead bass, and acoustic guitar,” said their manager, Given Khobane, director of Gtaketainment. C boy Teanet also showed talent as a soccer player and managed to reach the second division league with Winners Park.
He said the duo recorded their first song in 2010 with Bomba Mashesha, King Just, T Bruce, and LEXXYPHONIC. In 2011 they recorded their first song together, called Double Pashash. The brothers also spent time in the studio where they honed their sound and production skills. In 2017 they started their group, called Rise Teanet. The first two letters of Rise represent Richie (RI) and the second, Sello (SE). They say Rise refers to “rising to the legacy that their parents started”.
Their first major performance was in August 2017 at the Letaba Show where they shared the stage with artists like Dr Malinga and Candy Tsamandebele. “With their climb to stardom imminent, they collaborated with another rising star at the time, Lil Meri, on a hit track that became a memorable song, called Mabarebare.” They also worked with musicians such as General Manizo, The Look DrumBeat, Dj Boyo, Dr Oumega and released songs such as Baloya ba Sega, Di Ya ila, African Brothers, Re llela bophelo, Machonisa and Ba Nhloile.
Their big break came when they released a single with superstar, King Monada, called Nunu. The song was viewed over two million times in eight months on YouTube and introduced Rise Teanet to a big audience. “To date it remains a massive hit,” he added. They started to work with H3M Production and Gtaketainment in 2021 and have since released many hit songs. Collaborations with artists such as Master Betho and Phobla De Shoes, and CK the Dj have contributed to their popularity.
“They are also featured in Dr Skaro’s trending song, Ae_Enough, which is receiving airtime on Thobela FM at the moment.” Their inspiration comes from their parents who instilled a love for music in them. They are also inspired by artists like General Muzka, King Monada, Wiz Khalifa, Ed Sheeran, and Winky D, to mention a few.
“In July 2021, Rise Teanet did a media tour where they had interviews on both national and community radio stations, including a television interview on Newzroom Afrika,” said Khobane. They are currently in the studio working on new tracks which will be released soon. “They have maintained their legendary father’s legacy and have done so with ease,” Khobane said. “Look out for these boys, the sky is their limit.”
