The SABC’s first Xitsonga drama series, Giyani – Land of Blood, set for broadcast on SABC2 from 1 April

The first Xitsonga Drama Series is set for broadcast on SABC2 from the 1st of April 2019. A year ago, TV SA ran a Casting Call for Mzansi’s first Xitsonga Drama Series and now it’s time for Giyani: Land of Blood to premier on screen.

We can already imagine the vibrant and bright colours that will grace our screens when this new series airs. The Vatsonga Community is popularly known for their significant Xibelani dance, fast-paced music and bright colours.




We live in a society riddled with stereotypes, some good and some bad. Film and TV opened the platform to eradicate and correct these stereotypes. There’s no question about the joy of the 2.1 million XiTsonga speakers when they see this new series that will resonate with their everyday culture.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GIYANI: LAND OF BLOOD

It was written and produced by Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon of Tshedza Pictures, the company responsible for M-Net’s telenovela The River which is broadcast on 1Magic (Dstv channel 103). Giyani: Land Of Blood will air two episodes per week on SABC2 from Monday, 1 April at 21:30 and will go up against e.TV’s Imbewu: The Seed.

Giyani: Land of Blood is sure to pave the way to shine the spotlight on fresh new talent representing the Vatsonga Community. The new series will star few familiar faces in the South African TV and Music Industry.




Well-known and much-loved songstress Yvonne Chaka Chaka will star in this new series, Muvhango star Ndivhuwo Mutsila, Charles Baloyi (Hola Mpinji!, The River), Obed “Tsutsuma” Baloyi (Ga Re Dumele, Soul Buddyz), Candy “Tsa Mandebele” Mokwena and Linah “Ebony” Ngcobo.

Giyani: Land of Blood drama series was filmed partly in Giyani (Limpopo) and partly in Jozi at Q-Studios and It is going to air two nights a week.
