POLOKWANE REGIONAL COURT SENTENCES MAN TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING 13-YEAR-OLD NIECE

The Polokwane Regional Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his 13-year-old niece. The sentence was handed down on 12 August 2025, bringing closure to a case that shocked the local community.

The incident occurred in May 2020 at the victim’s home in Bergenek Village in the Westenburg policing area.The accused, who is the victim’s uncle, found the 13-year-old girl alone at home. He showed her a condom and asked if she knew what it was, referencing sexual education she had received at school. The suspect then proceeded to sexually assault the minor.

The victim courageously reported the incident to her family in July 2020, leading to the immediate arrest of the perpetrator. The accused remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings.

The case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Sello Moreroa of the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, operating within the Westernburg policing area. The thorough investigation and dedicated prosecution efforts resulted in the successful conviction.

The identity of the accused is being withheld to protect the victim’s privacy and dignity.
