24-YEAR-OLD EDITH NKANYANI SENTENCED FOR MURDER AND ASSAULT IN GIYANI

The Giyani Regional Court handed down a significant sentence to 24-year-old Edith Nkanyani on Friday 30th May 2025, convicted of murder and assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The court heard that on Sunday, 22 October 2023, Nkanyani and his friend were at a local tavern near Munyangani in Mapayeni village outside, Giyani. When his friend’s ex-girlfriend arrived in a white Golf car, the duo monitored the vehicle’s movements. As the car approached, they threw stones at it, prompting the driver to stop and investigate.

Nkanyani and his friend approached the vehicle, and Nkanyani opened the door to find his friend’s ex-girlfriend with two African males in the back seat. After a brief confrontation, Nkanyani stabbed one of the passengers with a sharp object. The front passenger, Hlungwani (28), was also stabbed in the chest and died instantly. The other victim was transported to Nkhensani Hospital for medical treatment.

Detective Sergeant Gugu Manganyi of Giyani SAPS successfully investigated the case, tracing and arresting Nkanyani within 48 hours. Manganyi also opposed bail, ensuring the accused remained in custody.

On Friday, 30 May 2025, Nkanyani appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court for sentencing. He received:

– 15 years’ imprisonment for murder (Count 1)
– 3 years’ imprisonment for assault GBH (Count 2)
