A 58-YEAR-OLD TEACHER ACCUSED OF RAPING A 13-YEAR-OLD LEANER RESIGNS TO CASH HIS PENSION FUND

The School Governing Body (SGB) Federation in Limpopo says it is common for teachers accused of sexual misconduct to resign so they can protect their retirement money.




This follows the resignation of a 58-year-old teacher who is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl at a primary school in Makotopong, near Mankweng. The Limpopo Department of Education confirmed receiving his resignation letter.

Federation chairperson Derick Mosoana says this needs to change.

“It would be great if there was a law that allows learners to claim money from the teacher’s retirement benefits,” said Mosoana. “That money could help pay for counselling and support services for the victim.”



The teacher is expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today for his formal bail application.

Mosoana is asking the court to move fast with the case.

“Delays can hurt the child even more. We are pleading for the court to handle this case quickly,” he said.




He also believes the teacher should not be given bail.

“We are dealing with a serious crime here. Granting bail could put the child and other learners at more risk,” said Mosoana.



The Department of Education has not yet said what steps will be taken after the resignation.
