33-YEAR-OLD NICOLAS MOOKAMEDI FROM MAVELE VILLAGE SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPE AND ROBBERY

Tzaneen Regional Court in Limpopo has sentenced to life imprisonment Mookamedi Nicolas for rape and three additional years for robbery.




The 33-year-old man from Mavele village was found guilty of raping and robbing his victim of a cell phone near Tarentaal Lefry farm in 2021.

“He robbed the victim of his cellphone and further raped her twice around April 2021 while she was on her way to work,” said the spokesperson for National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.



The court found that on the said day, the accused took the victim to the bushes near the road while threatening to kill her with a knife before raping and robbing her.

The victim managed to escape after the ordeal and the accused was later traced and arrested with the help of community members.




Malabi-Dzhangi said the state submitted that the accused be removed from the public for his failure to show remorse.

“The prosecutor further argued that the accused has demonstrated that he does not respect women, and he is not a suitable candidate for rehabilitation. Therefore, he should be removed from society permanently, and there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence,” she added.



Although the accused pleaded not guilty to the offences, NPA said justice prevailed through state led evidence from witnesses.
