87 DEAD BODIES RETRIEVED FROM STILFONTEIN MINE SHAFT

Authorities say they have thus far retrieved 87 bodies of illegal miners who were trapped under a mine shaft in Stillfontein, North West.

246 zama – zamas were rescued alive from the abandoned mine shaft after they got stuck late last year.

Only 3 South Africans are among the 246 who are alive while 128 are from Mozambique, 33 from Zimbabwe and 80 originate from Lesotho.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions says it is actively pursuing all legal options to hold the government accountable for the deaths of illegal miners underground in Stilfontein.

However, Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, asserts that the government should not be held responsible for these fatalities.
