Phalaborwa Woman Sells Termites To Fund Tertiary Studies

Relebohile Mathebula, a 21-year-old from Lulekani Kurhula in Phalaborwa, is carving out a path to a brighter future through determination and resourcefulness.

After matriculating in 2023 from Tlhavekisa High School, Mathebula faced the harsh reality of financial constraints, forcing her to take a gap year.

However, she has since been accepted to study Financial Management in Mpumalanga in 2025, with the hope of securing NSFAS funding.

Despite this support, she realized she would still need money for transportation, cosmetics, and other essentials.

To bridge the gap, Mathebula turned to an unconventional solution—selling termites, locally known as Magoro or Manjenje. These protein-rich insects are a popular delicacy in Limpopo and neighboring SADC countries.

She sells a cup of termites for R20 and a 2kg pack for R100, saving every rand she earns to support her studies.

I want to make enough money to go to school next year. My family cannot afford to give me a decent life,” she said.

Mathebula comes from a family of six, with her parents currently unemployed and her four siblings relying on them. This challenging situation has only strengthened her resolve to pursue her dream of becoming a financial accountant.

Experts highlight the nutritional benefits of termites, noting that they are rich in protein, vitamin A, and vitamin C, while being low in anti-nutrient components.

Their consumption is seen as a sustainable and healthy food source.

Mathebula’s inspiring story showcases resilience and creativity in overcoming obstacles. Her determination serves as a beacon of hope for others in similar circumstances.
