TIYISELA MONGWE, A LEGAL EAGLE FROM NKOWANKOWA

Nkowankowa-born and bred Legal Practitioner and passionate Litigator Tiyisela Mongwe says that looking back to South Africa’s history, the legal profession was male-dominated, but many women have occupied senior legal positions lately.

Mongwe upholds that women stand a fair chance of succeeding in the legal profession as their male counterparts, “The president has appointed several women judges in our courts, and generally, we do have women Attorneys, prosecutors, advocates, and magistrates,” she exclaims.

Mongwe, who believes in hard work to prove excellence, says she was motivated to follow the legal profession to address the patriarchal myth in black societies that only men can become legal gurus. Mongwe admits she was driven by the injustice in communities, gender-based violence that intensifies, and issues of human rights as enshrined in the constitution.

The vibrant attorney is the Managing Director of T. Mamitwa Attorneys Inc., founded by her in 2014. She was admitted as an Attorney in 2023 and earned the right of appearance in the High Court in 2015.

Mogwe obtained her LLB degree at the University of Limpopo in 2011. She served her articles with Magabe Attorneys and Legal Aid South Africa (Tzaneen Justice Centre). The experienced legal practitioner has also served as a professional assistant at various law firms, including the Legal Aid S.A., and acted as Magistrate for over two years.

The ambitious Mongwe is currently preparing for notary and conveyancing examinations, which, if obtained, will make her the only black woman notary and conveyancer in Tzaneen.

I constantly set goals for myself so that I always have something to achieve,” she says.
