Learning at Akanani Junior Primary School, Nkambako Village under N’wamitwa Traditional Authority outside Tzaneen was disrupted this morning after lightning allegedly struck the school while learners where preparing to resume normal school program.

Parents and the community of Ndhuna Maweni at large have expressed great shock following the incident.

“It rained this morning then lightning and thunderstorm subsequently erupted, striking and injuring a dozen learners. I started panicking when I saw about three ambulances approaching the school. I enquired and I was informed of the news”, a parent said.

It is reported that the grade 6 class was mostly affected. The principal of the school Matilda Ngobeni confirmed the incident, but indicated that the situation is being monitored and that there is no reason for parents to be alarmed.

As it stands, affected learners have been transported to a nearby medical facility for assessment.
