A man from Zimbabwe took his own life after chopping his wife and child with a panga in Giyani

Police in Giyani are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted murder and an inquest which happened at Shivulani Village outside Giyani on Sunday 25 September.

Police said that the deceased allegedly had a dispute with his wife on Saturday night, subsequently, community policing forums were convened to assist in resolving the problem.

The community policing forum managed to calm the situation. The wife and the child were taken to a place of safety.

In the early hours of Sunday, the husband called his wife and asked to meet with her to straighten out their issues.

They met on the street, fought again, and the husband chopped the mother and her 04-year-old son with a panga and left them on the street.

They were found by motorists who took the victims to hospital. The 04-year-old boy is in critical condition and the mother suffered serious injuries.

Community members found the presumed husband gasping something like a poisonous fluid in his mouth. He was found on the sports ground a few meters from the scene. He was certified dead at the scene by EMS personnel.

The deceased has been identified as Cheke from Zimbabwe. While the forensic team was searching the body, they found a large knife in his possession.

The motive for this incident is still unknown, but gender-based violence cannot be ruled out here”, added Constable Ridgewell Rikhotso.
