Where did Kaizer Chiefs go wrong

By Godlive Masinge

In South Africa, we have 16 teams campaigning in the DSTV Premiership and Kaizer Chiefs is one of the most successful clubs in the league.

The Naturena based club has much Rich History within the South African Football landscape. But in recent years, we’ve seen the club declining in terms of the standard they display on the field of play.

When you talk about The Phefeni Glamour Boys in the past, most clubs would shiver because of their then slogan “Operation Vat Alles” because they won almost every trophy at stake in the South African National League. With the rise of the Tshwane giants, Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Kaizer Chiefs have been decreased to just an ordinary club.

Their spending patterns have shown in the past few seasons that the once Big Team is heading for a crash and it will take them some years to rebuild because they prefer to sign players who are out of contracts every season. FIFA has also added salt in the wound by banning them from signing players, meaning there’s still a big mountain to climb with the current crop of players.

In the past few seasons, Kaizer Chiefs signed Mamelodi Sundowns players who were on their way out, the likes of Castro, Mphahlele and Billiat on a free transfer which could signal the start of the downward spiral. Big spenders like Mamelodi Sundowns are always achieving every season, the same cannot be said about Kaizer Chiefs.
