Residents of Mtititi demands water instead of a bridge

The disgruntled residents at Mtititi Town/Muhunguti are demanding answers from the ward Cllr, Joe Chavani under Collins Chabane Municipality over the construction of the bridge project.

Dwellers are claiming that over R30 Million (Municipal Infrastructure Grant) was spent on the construction of the bridge project by the Collins Chabane Local Municipality.

Residents convened the meeting on Sunday, 18 October wherein, it was resolved that: a committee be established to meet with the Ward Cllr Chavani to clarify the matter. However, the Ward Cllr is refusing to meet with the legitimate structure elected by the community, citing that he won’t meet the Committee during level 1 COVID-19 regulations.

Residents are furious that local people were not consulted or empowered on the construction of the bridge. They said, only friends and relatives benefited from the project.

“The bridge isn’t in line with what we have submitted during the Imbizo on the IDP budget. We want water not a bridge. Our Cllr is not staying with us, but residing in Malamulele town that’s why he doesn’t care.

“We want the Mayor to address us since the Ward Cllr is refusing to engage the committee that was elected by the community to represent our grievances”, said one of the committee members representing the community.

Collins Chabane Municipality Spokesperson, Isaac Nukeri wasn’t reached for a comment at the time of going to press.
