65-Year old Grandfather to look in court for allegedly raping granddaughter

A 65-year old pensioner was arrested on 30 July 2020 at Mokgwathi village under Mokwakwaila policing area within the Mopani District for allegedly raping his granddaughter. it’s believed that neighbours’ informed the police of the rape ordeal of a 14-year old, who has been sexually abused by her grandfather for over two years.

The young lady was reportedly raped by her grandfather several times since she was 12 years old dating back to 2018. The rape incidents materialized when the victim’s grandmother wasn’t home and it’s said that the grandfather would usually bribe the victim with money after violating the kid. The suspect went as far as attempting to sell his granddaughter to his friends so they will also sexually abuse her.




The frightened 14-year old managed to flee and ran to a neighbours’ house for help. She told her neighbours about her ordeal and that they immediately called the police, who responded swiftly to open an investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect. Limpopo SAPS Provincial Commissioner, general officer Nneke Ledwaba has thanked the community, especially the neighbour who helped the victim in her time of need.

The child was immediately taken to the Victim Empowerment Centre and also the relevant stakeholders have since been engaged. “We condemn within the strongest possible terms the abuse of kids and also the seemingly immoral tendencies of older men taking advantage of the foremost vulnerable members of the society. The swift reaction by police members who received the report is commendable,” said Ledwaba.




The suspect will appear before the Bolobedu Magistrate Court on Monday, 03 August 2020 on a charge of rape. investigation are still ongoing.
